    Description

Being offered for sale is this fine quality Japanese Meiji Satsuma low bowl signed Meizan, one of the best artists of Satsuma.
In 2014, a vase sold at a major auction house with similarities to this piece sold for ,250 and according to the listing, was signed Yabu Meizan. The figures on both pieces, although a bit bigger in scale on the low bowl, have similar characteristics in the figures, their expressions in the faces, clothing and coloring. Other similarities exist in both with raised enamels, intricate brocade work and exquisite flowers.
The brocade work on this bowl is similar to Yabu Meizan's earlier pieces. I have seen this same type of work on other pieces, some signed with the circle and dot in the center which Louis Lawrence states in his recent book is Yabu's son. Some pieces by Meizan have the same shapes that Yabu used.
If there is an interested viewer out there who would like to discuss this or share information, please feel free to contact me.
Here is a chance to own a fine piece of Satsuma by Meizan, at a fraction of the cost of a Yabu Meizan piece, yet equally fine workmanship. Perhaps, some day, a link may be established between these two Meizan artists, and that this bowl could actually be an early Yabu Meizan.
The raised white enamel(and some other raised enamel colors) is(are) typical of Yabu Meizan.
The little boys are gleefully playing their various musical instruments and having a great time! The motion in their body stances is felt. The expressions on their faces and the clothing details are superb.
The floral border and brocade work are also excellent (the same work is found on pieces by Yabu Meizan).
The artistic quality of this piece is on a par with the best pieces of Satsuma at a fraction of the cost.
The shape of this bowl is unusual in that it cleverly steps down a couple of millimeters on either side of the rims in opposite directions.
The crackle glaze is very fine, indicative of earlier pieces.
The truest color is in the first and fourth photos. I need to retake the second photo. The color is off.
Condition: Excellent No chips, cracks, damages or restorations. Very little wear to gold.
Please feel free to contact me/share information/thoughts. It is possible that this bowl is an early Yabu Meizan.
    Dimensions: 5 7/8" long x 4 3/4" wide x 1 1/4" high.
Please read my feedback and bid with confidence! I guarantee satisfaction and item is as described or money back, providing item returned in sent condition, the way it was packed, and shortly after it was received.
